He does an awful job of running his section of the lab, and apparently to save Chell’s life, he helps her escape. She’s kept in suspended hibernation until Wheatley, another core AI, wakes her up. (Apparently, she didn’t make her escape after destroying GLaDOS, the villainous AI from the original.) The game brings back its dry humor as players once again take on the role of the silent test subject, Chell. It’s hard for any developer to replicate perfection. If they’re looking for a bigger and deeper sequel, they certainly found it.īut is it better than the first one? “Portal 2” tries to be, but it falls a hair short. Players have certain expectations that are hard to live up to. It’s great to be a game that comes out of nowhere to surprise fans, but doing that a second time is a harder prospect. Unlike the original, “Portal 2” faces a harder test. It was by far the most memorable game of the year, and it housed a trove of Internet memes. Valve saw the potential in this and acquired the team that made “Narbacular Drop.” They fleshed out the ideas and the result was one of the most original experiences ever. Stepping through one instantly transports players to the other side. When firing the device, players can instantly traverse a wide distance just by placing an entryway in one spot and an exit hole in another. ![]() The spiritual successor to the indie hit “Narbacular Drop,” “Portal” introduced players to the concept of a portal gun that shoots wormholes instead of bullets. “The Orange Box” - a collection of three games - had a ridiculous amount to offer, but the most impressive title, and the reason for its high ranking, was “Portal.” That game was the rare mix of gameplay, story and music that fit so elegantly well. Back then, it looked like the start of something revolutionary.įour years later, I wish I could have a second crack at it. ![]() At the top, I chose “Rock Band” for its potential to extend games’ reach and change the music industry. ![]() It was one tough field then, stacked with an abundance of top-notch titles. Looking back at 2007, I may have been wrong about my game of the year. ![]()
